Arusha National Park

Arusha Park – The Gateway to Tanzania’s Safari Experience

Arusha National Park is a compact yet remarkably diverse safari destination located just a short drive from Arusha town. Often described as the “hidden gem of the northern circuit,” the park offers a unique combination of landscapes that include lush montane forests, open savannahs, volcanic craters, alpine highlands, and sparkling crater lakes.

Unlike larger parks that require long game drives, Arusha National Park is ideal for short safaris and day trips, making it one of the most accessible wildlife areas in Tanzania. Despite its small size, the park delivers a rich and intimate safari experience, blending scenic beauty with close wildlife encounters.

Wildlife in Arusha National Park

Arusha National Park offers a unique wildlife experience where animals are often seen at close range due to the park’s dense vegetation and compact layout. It is not a park of vast herds like the Serengeti, but rather a place of quiet, detailed encounters in diverse habitats.

The park is famous for its populations of giraffes, which are frequently seen gracefully moving across open meadows with Mount Meru as a backdrop. Buffaloes are also common and often found grazing in large herds within the grasslands and forest edges.

Other wildlife includes zebras, warthogs, waterbucks, and bushbucks, which inhabit the park’s open and wooded areas. The forested regions are home to blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and vervet monkeys, making Arusha one of the best places in Tanzania for primate viewing.

Although large predators are rare, leopards are occasionally present but elusive. Instead, the park focuses more on herbivores and primates, offering a peaceful and scenic safari atmosphere rather than high-intensity predator action.

Birdlife – A Rich Highland Birding Paradise

Arusha National Park is one of the best birdwatching destinations in northern Tanzania, with over 400 recorded bird species across its varied habitats. Its combination of forests, lakes, wetlands, and alpine zones creates ideal conditions for both resident and migratory birds.

The Momella Lakes are a major highlight, attracting large flocks of flamingos, pelicans, herons, and other waterbirds. These alkaline lakes often reflect pink hues when flamingos gather in large numbers, creating stunning photographic scenes.

The montane forests are home to a wide range of forest species, including turacos, hornbills, and the striking silvery-cheeked hornbill. Sunbirds, bee-eaters, and barbets add vibrant color to the canopy, while raptors such as augur buzzards and crowned eagles can be seen soaring above the highlands.

Because of its elevation range, Arusha National Park supports both lowland and highland bird species, making it a highly rewarding destination for bird enthusiasts seeking diversity within a small area.

The dry season (June to October)

Is ideal for clear views of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro (on clear days), as well as easier wildlife spotting due to thinner vegetation. This is also the best time for walking safaris and game drives.

The wet season (November to May)

Transforms the park into a lush green landscape filled with wildflowers, active birdlife, and dramatic scenery. This is the best period for birdwatching and photography, as migratory species are present and the forests are vibrant and alive.
