Tanzania Southern Circuit

Discover Africa’s untouched soul

The Southern Circuit of Tanzania is a vast and less-crowded safari region known for its untouched wilderness, remote landscapes, and authentic wildlife experiences. It is ideal for travelers seeking privacy, adventure, and raw African nature. Unlike the busier northern safari routes, this region offers a slower, more exclusive journey into some of Africa’s most pristine ecosystems.

It is home to enormous protected areas, where wildlife roams freely across endless savannahs, river systems, forests, and mountains. The Southern Circuit is especially popular for boat safaris, walking safaris, and fly-in safaris, making it one of the most diverse safari regions in East Africa.

The region is also well connected to Dar es Salaam, making it a convenient starting point for travelers arriving from international flights or combining safari with coastal holidays in Zanzibar. From big predator sightings to rare primates and untouched wilderness, the Southern Circuit delivers a truly wild African experience far from mass tourism.

NYERERE NATIONAL PARK

Formerly part of Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is the largest protected wildlife area in Africa. It is defined by the mighty Rufiji River, which creates a network of lakes, channels, and wetlands supporting rich biodiversity.

The park is famous for boat safaris, where visitors can see hippos, crocodiles, elephants drinking at the riverbanks, and abundant birdlife. Game drives also reveal lions, wild dogs, giraffes, buffalo, and antelopes in a remote, uncrowded setting. Walking safaris with armed rangers offer a more immersive wilderness experience.

Ruaha is Tanzania’s second-largest national park and one of the most dramatic wildlife regions in East Africa. It is known for its rugged landscapes, baobab-dotted plains, and the life-giving Great Ruaha River.

The park supports one of the largest populations of elephants in East Africa and is also a stronghold for predators such as lions, leopards, and endangered African wild dogs. Ruaha is perfect for travelers who want off-the-beaten-path safaris with fewer vehicles and highly rewarding wildlife encounters.

Mikumi is the most accessible park in the Southern Circuit and is often included in short safari itineraries from Dar es Salaam. Its open Mkata Floodplain is ideal for spotting wildlife easily, including zebras, giraffes, elephants, buffalo, and lions.

The park is sometimes compared to the Serengeti due to its wide savannah scenery, making it a great introduction to Tanzania’s safari experience.

Known as the “Galapagos of Africa,” Udzungwa is a biodiversity hotspot with dense tropical rainforests, waterfalls, and endemic species. Unlike traditional safari parks, Udzungwa is best explored on foot through hiking trails.

The highlight is the spectacular Sanje Waterfalls, one of the highest in Tanzania. Visitors may also encounter rare primates such as the Udzungwa red colobus monkey and Sanje mangabey, found nowhere else in the world.

Saadani is the only park in East Africa where the Indian Ocean meets the African bush. This unique location allows visitors to combine traditional game drives with beach relaxation.

Wildlife includes elephants, giraffes, buffalo, antelopes, and occasional lions, while the Wami River offers boat safaris with crocodiles, hippos, and rich birdlife. Saadani is ideal for combining safari and coastal experiences in one destination.
